The Atrina tuberculosa is a type of mussel from the pen mussel family (Pinnidae). Distribution areas are the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to Panama and the waters around the Galapagos Islands .

features

The same-hinged, ham-shaped housing is up to 29 cm long. The small vertebrae sit near the front end. The dorsal margin is initially concave at the anterior end, then almost straight. The ventral edge is also concave at the front end and convexly arched at the rear end. The rear edge is well rounded. The outline changes as it grows.

The anterior sphincter is small, somewhat elongated, but is not quite at the edge of the anterior end. The posterior sphincter, on the other hand, is very large and sits roughly in the middle, up to three fifths of the length of the case, not quite at the upper end of the mother-of-pearl layer .

The shell is very thick. It is dark brown to almost black on the outside. On the outside of juvenile cases there are 12 to 15 fine radial ribs, which are studded with rows of brittle, short thorns. Adult specimens are mostly without ribs and thorns, there are only growth lines parallel to the edge.

Similar species

In the distribution area of Atrina tuberculosa , the other Atrina species ( Atrina texta , Atrina oldroydi , Atrina maura and Atrina cumingii ) are represented. They have a significantly lighter brown color and the shells are not so thick and heavy.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Atrina tuberculosa is the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California (31 ° N), the southern Baja California (28 ° N) to Panama (7 ° N) and the waters around the Galapagos Islands (1 ° S).

Atrina tuberculosa lives in tidal and shallow water areas on muddy bottoms. The shrimp Pontonia margarita lives as a commensal in the shell's mantle cavity .

Taxonomy

The taxon was proposed by George Brettingham Sowerby I in 1835 in the original combination Pinna tuberculosa . It is now generally accepted in the genus Atrina .
