Attila Pethő (born February 26, 1950 in Sátoraljaújhely , Hungary ) is a Hungarian mathematician and computer scientist who deals with algorithmic number theory. He is a professor at the University of Debrecen .

Pethő studied mathematics from 1969 at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen with a diploma in 1974 and a doctorate (Ph. D.) in 1976 with Kálmán Győry ( On the distribution of the solutions of standard form equations ). At the same time he was an assistant in the department of algebra and number theory at the university until 1987. In 1981 he received the candidate title at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (CSc, Candidatus Scientiarum) and in 1992 the doctorate (D. Sc., In the Russian system, corresponding to a habilitation). In 1987 he became assistant professor in Debrecen and in 1988 head of the computer center of the university and head of the faculty of computer science. From 1992 to 1997 he was head of the computer center of the medical faculty. In 1994 he was given a full professorship in the Faculty of Computer Science, which he headed from 2000, and from 2004 as dean.

He has been honorary professor at the Graz University of Technology since 2002. He was also visiting professor at the Saarland University (1990/91, 1997/98, 2001), at the Center de Recerca Matemàtica in Barcelona (1996), the Graz University of Technology (1995/96), at the University of Strasbourg (1992, 1994, 1999) and the Johannes Kepler University Linz (2006).

In 1984/85 he received the Humboldt Research Award and was with the associated scholarship at the Universities of Cologne and Düsseldorf. In 1978 he received the Géza Grünwald Prize of the Hungarian Mathematical Society (János Bolyai Society), in 1992 the Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 2000 the Prize of the Farkas Bolyai Society, in 2004 the Szent-Györgyi Albert Prize of the Hungarian Ministry of Education and in 2008 the Tibor Szele Prize the János Bolyai Society.
