Attila Sallustro (born November 17, 1908 in Asunción , † May 23, 1983 in Naples ) was an Italian football player of Paraguayan descent.

He played for SSC Napoli for twelve years from 1925 to 1937 and is considered one of the club's most famous players.

Life

Early years

Sallustro was born in Paraguay in 1908 as the son of wealthy Italian parents, but moved with them to Italy as a teenager, where his father urged him to start a professional football career.

Club career

After moving to Italy, Sallustro and his brother Oreste joined SSC Napoli, where both would spend most of their careers. After some good performances in the club, Attila was quickly called "Il Veltro" (the greyhound ) and "Il Divino" (the divine) - this nickname he clearly lived up to in his active years at the club: he scored in 259 games for the club 102 goals before moving to Salernitana Calcio for another two years in 1937 .

There he scored a goal in 14 games before the Second World War forced him to stop his career.

Career in the national team

His first two appointments to the Italian national team came in 1929, in one of the games he scored a goal. Alongside Marcello Mihalic , Sallustro is one of the first SSC Napoli players to be called up for the Italian national team.

Despite his good performance in the club, Sallustro was called up to the national team only once after the two games, as Giuseppe Meazza was usually preferred.
