Schematic representation

As Außenpolgenerator the construction is an electric generator refers to the in the coil for the exciter field at the stator are located. In this case, the magnetic field lines of the stator penetrate the windings of the rotor and induce an alternating voltage in them . The power provided is derived from the rotor via slip rings and carbon brushes . Outer pole generators are mostly only used as auxiliary generators or excitation machines of lower power, since the discharge of high currents is associated with considerable effort and losses in the slip ring apparatus.

The generator built in the opposite way is called an internal pole generator ( internal pole machine ).
