The Aubinger water tower is an industrial monument in Neuaubing in the Munich district of Aubing .

history

After the rapid population growth in the then independent community of Aubing, especially in its district Neuaubing, a well drilling became necessary for the water supply at the beginning of the 20th century.

The water tower was built as part of the 12,830 m² Aubingen waterworks in 1909/10 in order to be able to ensure the necessary water pressure. In addition to the tower with a residential building for the water warden and his family, a brick workshop building, a well house with access to the well shaft and the two wells as well as a barrack for the storage of materials and equipment for the operation of the water pipe network were built. The fountain house is about 20 m east of the tower, from the outside only two turrets can be seen standing on a hill. The electric pumps, built in 1910 and 1934, delivered the water from a depth of up to 20 meters and together had a delivery rate of 60 liters per second.

The plant supplied both Alt-Aubing and Neuaubing equally. In 1954 it was taken out of service after the Munich municipal utilities established the connection to their water supply network. The wells were filled in. The tower was then temporarily let.

In 2003 the Stadtwerke sold the tower to Heimbau Bayern , which originally wanted to build apartments and studios, but did not do so, so the tower was empty. It was rented out from 2011 and, after renovation, the “Wasserturm 39” art gallery opened on October 19, 2012 in the adjoining Wasserwart residential building and on the lower tower floors. The upper floors are not accessible for security reasons.

architecture

The 37 meter high water tower has a cross section of 6.9 × 6.7 meters. It carries a 7.1 × 8.1 m² water house with space for two container chambers that together hold 120 cubic meters of water. Compared to the supply area, there was a height difference of 35 meters and therefore corresponding water pressure.

The tower is a representative of the Heimat style and is reminiscent of a medieval city tower. Nevertheless, modern construction techniques were used in its construction; the concrete water tank has been preserved in its - somewhat wider - upper part . Both the water house on the tower and the residential building have a mansard roof . The landmarked tower can be seen from afar and has become a landmark of Neuaubing and Aubing.
