Auchans Castle , also Auchans House , is the ruin of a manor near the Scottish village of Dundonald in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The lands of "Achynche" went to Clan Wallace in 1527 . At that time, a previous building already existed at this location. At the end of the 16th century, a building is described that could be identical to the former. After the lands passed to William Cochrane, 1st Earl of Dundonald in 1640 , construction of today's Auchans Castle began. The extent to which fragments of the previous building were integrated has not been clarified. The last recorded resident of Auchan's Castle was Susannah, Countess of Eglinton, who died in 1780. A further use is only described at the time of the First World War . So prisoners of war were housed there. The roof collapsed in the 1920s. In 1992 the building was inscribed on the Scotland List of Endangered Structures.

description

The manor is isolated off the A759 around 400 m west of Dundonald. It has an L-shaped floor plan. Although one could assume an original fortress, the thickness of the masonry from 65 to 75 cm shows the purpose as a residential building. Only the masonry of the oldest parts of the building is up to 90 cm thick. This harmonizes with the year of construction at a time when fortress structures increasingly faded into the background. Unexpectedly, the south gable is designed with Gothic tracery . The windows are partly crowned by cornices . The gables are made as a stepped gable . The west wing was expanded, probably in three phases.
