Bielefeld city forest
The Bielefelder Stadtwald is a communal forest in Bielefeld . It has an area of 2,256 hectares and thus comprises around 43 % of the forest area and 8.7% of the total area of the East Westphalian city. 83.4% belong to the city of Bielefeld, the rest to the local public utilities .

The city forest is spread over around 650 areas. Most of it is located between the TERRA.vita nature and geopark and the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park .
The two largest contiguous areas are in the urban district of Gadderbaum and the adjoining Dornberg in the vicinity of the Johannisberg and on the border between Senne and Sennestadt .
The Bielefeld city forest is mainly located in the Weserbergland growth area and generally has an average temperature of 7–9 ° C per year and precipitation of 650–900 mm / a, although part of the city forest is affected by higher precipitation values because it is on the windward side lies. There are up to 1200 mm / a of precipitation to be measured. The growing season lasts between 140 and 170 days, depending on the altitude.

Nature reserves
Around 450 hectares of the area are nature conservation and flora-fauna habitat areas. A ninth of this area is not cultivated in any form. These include, for example, the Kahler Berg natural forest and the Finnteiche nature reserve in Senne.

The management of the city forest is handled by the Bielefeld environmental company with its forest administration, for which, in addition to the economic aspects of forest use, the protection and recreational function of the forest play a role. In addition to forest management, the forest has a prominent function as an urban recreational area for the city of Bielefeld. According to the size of the forest area, several uses have been established. Particularly noteworthy are the Hermannsweg , which crosses parts of the forest, the Olderdissen home animal park , which is located in the city forest, and the use of mountain bike routes. Large areas are accessible by hiking trails, and in some areas there are nature trails .
