The home zoo Olderdissen [ ˈʔɔlɐˌdɪsn̩ ] is a municipal zoo in Bielefeld . 90 different species with over 450 individuals can be observed on around 16  hectares . The park is operated by the city's environmental company, which offers a special feature that is open 24 hours a year all year round with free entry. The park focuses on the display, care and conservation of native species.

Location and layout

The zoo in May

Embedded in the Teutoburg Forest , the facility is located as part of the Bielefeld city forest in the TERRA.vita nature and geopark , a UNESCO- awarded geopark. The city center of Bielefeld is about four kilometers away. In the immediate vicinity there are other tourist attractions such as the botanical garden , the farmhouse museum and the Johannisberg . Due to its location and its constant accessibility, the Heimat zoo is integrated into numerous hiking and cycling trails, especially the Hermannsweg , and offers an important inner-city park . It is also part of the Bielefeld StadtParkLandschaft . The official address at which the main entrance is located is Dornberger Straße 149a.

The entire facility has a forest-like character and nestles against the slope of the Teutoburg Forest. There are also meadow enclosures and ponds as well as walk-in enclosures. In addition to the petting zoo, there is a historical garden, which was created for the city's 800th anniversary.

history

The origins of the zoo lie with the Hornbergs. Wilhelm Hornberg was a city forester and in 1929 found an orphaned fawn that was looked after by his wife. With the support of Paul Meyerkamp, the head of the garden department at the time, this led to the idea of setting up a zoo in Bielefeld with the focus on the local fauna . This home zoo was opened in 1930 and increased to around 500 animals by the Second World War . These included wolves , otters and numerous species of birds . By 1950, around 250 are said to have survived the war and the post-war period. The park, then also known as the Johannistal Zoo, developed into a popular attraction again in the following years. In particular, the quiet location and simultaneous proximity were appealing to the Bielefeld population. For this reason, the plan to build a 12 m wide western bypass through the park was not implemented . Instead, the park was steadily expanded in the following years, with the enclosures remaining relatively small and many individuals having to live in a small space. A special feature in the 1960s was the acquisition of two Alpine ibex , of which the female escaped from the enclosure and was found again after several weeks and searches by the military. In 1960, the dispute between the then chief forester Frohne, who owned the hunting rights in the Olderdissen district, and the actor Henry König also caused a stir. Frohne had shot the king's dog in front of the then regional church council and his family.

In the 1970s, a new pavilion was built for the specimen collection that burned down in 1974, and in 1980 the 50th anniversary was celebrated. Four years later, the bird of prey reception station was inaugurated , where injured animals - around 40 per year - are cared for. Over 60% of these animals can be released back into the wild . After 1987 the wild cat cages were torn down and spacious enclosures were created. Overall, the view of the animal in the Olderdissen home zoo has changed. It was no longer just viewed as a show object, but the aspects of species-appropriate keeping and animal welfare moved into the interests of the operators and the public. The park was expanded accordingly into the 21st century. At the same time, the professionalization of the company continued. Since 2003 there has been a zoo shop and a corporate design in the preparation collection building . The educational work of the green fox school as well as the public relations work for the local animal world is particularly important to the operators. For example, on the occasion of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday, a series of lectures on evolution and the local fauna was held in collaboration with the Volkswagen Foundation . The zoo management’s claim that access is always permitted and that it is free of charge.

Infrastructure

Meierhof

Meeting point in the park: The Meierhof

This farmstead dates back to before the city of Bielefeld was founded and has been continuously settled since then. The current building was erected in 1879. This includes two further outbuildings that now house the technical equipment and the management of the park. Noteworthy is the inscription stone from 1544, discovered in 2004 and exhibited in the café, which was built into a part of the building that was demolished at the time of the find. It bears the engraving MEGGER FRANS TO ALDERDISCE MV C XXXX IIII and as a special case also a coat of arms, which presumably represents a plow iron or an animal horn.

Since the park has no cash registers, the courtyard building serves as the main point of contact. In addition to a privately run catering business, it houses a kiosk and sanitary facilities.

Further infrastructure

There are also information boards and displays with parking plans near the Meierhof. Around this building there is a playground, a snack bar, the petting zoo and a small carousel . The preparation collection and the shop are in the immediate vicinity. At the south end of the park there is another playground and a second sales point. Automatic feeders can be found all over the site. Depending on the weather, carriage rides are offered in the park . Guided tours can also generally be booked.

Connection

The rafter mobile at the Tierpark stop

The park can be reached via hiking and biking trails. There are parking spaces on Dornberger Straße, but they are regularly overcrowded on weekends and public holidays. Accordingly, the infrastructure of the Johannisberg should also be used here. The transport company moBiel operates the park anfahrende city bus line 24. Also, the park is during the summer months to the trackless train rafter mobile connected, the old town, Sparrenburg combines and zoo.

financing

As a facility of the environmental company of the city of Bielefeld, it finances the park from the municipal budget . In addition, donations and parking fees are an important pillar of spending security. Accordingly, donation boxes can be found throughout the park. There is also a donation account. You can also sponsor animals and donate in kind. Sponsors can be seen through plaques and the posting of certificates. Companies and their foundations also participate. One example is the construction of the bear enclosure. Revenue is also generated from the sale of merchandising items. The zoo does not advertise, but offers an app and also operates here as the Bielefeld Zoo .

criticism

In addition to the general criticism of zoological gardens, the city of Bielefeld was accused of wasting taxes on the part of the taxpayers' association . However, the entrepreneurial striving for profit of a municipality as formulated in the corresponding article can be countered here by the fact that the city sees the maintenance of the park as a social responsibility and that the park is not a company either.

Others

  • The zoo, more precisely the environmental company of the city of Bielefeld, is a member of the German zoo society
  • The Bielefeld Puppet Theater organizes around 10 outdoor performances in the zoo every year.
  • The Bielefeld rock band Randale named their debut album after the zoo.
