history

The original Auchen Castle nearby dates back to around 1220. Sir Humphrey de Kirkpatrick , then Senestal of Annandale , had it built. The Kirkpatrick family were close allies of King Robert the Bruce , who was often a guest at Auchen Castle. The castle was no longer the seat of the family and the property fell to the Johnstone clan . The Johnstones are to this day the Lords of Annandale and General Johnstone had today's castle hotel completed in 1849. The hotel then fell to Sir William Youngster, 1st Baronet , from the Youngster family of breweries through marriage . After more than 150 years, the castle hotel still shows many original details, such as B. Victorian spring taps and reservoirs from which the hotel is still supplied with drinking water today. The property is home to many unusual species of trees and other plants that have been planted there over the centuries, some of which have a rich history and are unusual varieties.

Wedding celebrations

The Castle Hotel is one of Scotland's most popular wedding venues and is now used exclusively for those celebrations. In 2007 the wedding of model Michelle March and soccer player Will Haining took place there, about which OK! Magazine was reported. In the broadcast on Valentine's Day 2016 was Good Morning Britain by ITV Four Weddings from the Auchen Castle Hotel.

architecture

The Auchen Castle Hotel is known for its architectural peculiarities; his design is symbolic and earned him the nickname "Egypt". General Johnstone, who had the castle hotel built in its current appearance, served under Sir Ralph Abercromby in 1801 in Egypt in the war against the French . It is believed that the castle hotel and property were designed according to the positions of the units in the naval battle at Abukir . The floor plan comprises two wings, one in an east-west direction and one in a north-south direction. These two wings connect three corners of an isosceles triangle . At each of the three corners there are similar rooms, each with an eight-sided box window, five of which are visible from the outside, but the three inner sides are missing. This pattern of the number three can be seen throughout the castle hotel. At the entrance there are three steps with two Corinthian columns. These steps lead into the hotel over a checkerboard floor, symbolizing the entrance to King Solomon's temple . Opposite the entrance there is a staircase with 21 steps that lead up to a pyramid-shaped garden with two sphinx at the top . If you apply the number three to these stairs and divide the number of steps by them, you get the number seven. This is the number of steps in building a "ziggurat", as an Egyptian pyramid was originally called.
