Auchmacoy Dovecot

The Auchmacoy Dovecot is a pigeon tower near the Scottish town of Ellon in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The Auchmacoy Dovecot was built in 1638. It is one of the most important pigeon towers in Aberdeenshire in terms of architectural history.

The tower is isolated off the A90 around 2.5 kilometers east of Ellon. The tower, which is unusually designed for keeping pigeons, has a round, barrel-like body with two plain belt cornices surrounding it . An elongated body protrudes from this, which closes with a steeply sloping, slate-covered gable roof with stepped gables made of light granite . The gargoyles are made with sculptured faces.

The nest boxes are embedded in the inner walls and are largely destroyed today. A mausoleum for Thomas Buchan , who died in 1866, was set up below the tower .
