The Auchtavan Cottage is a residential building near the Scottish village of Crathie in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 2005 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, it forms a monument ensemble with the nearby Queen Mother's Cottage and the threshing mill.

history

In the rural settlement of Auchtavan , which has since been abandoned , three buildings are still preserved today. The Auchtavan Cottage residential building dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is one of the rare surviving examples of what was once a widespread type of building in rural Scotland. Cottages with open hearths and sparkling hats are first recorded in Angus in 1746 . In the second half of the 18th century, this type of construction spread in east, central and northeast Scotland as far as Shetland . The Auchtavan Cottage has largely been preserved in its original condition. The sparkling hat could be a later addition, as its size does not correspond to the open hearth below.

description

The residential building is isolated in Glen Feardar around five kilometers west of Crathie. The masonry of the one-story, elongated building consists of roughly hewn rubble stone . Its main facade is three axes wide. The original thatched roof with turf has been preserved, but externally protected by corrugated iron . Cruck arches span the roof structure. On one of the gable ends, the remains of the wooden framework of the spark hat are preserved.
