The Church of the Resurrection is a Protestant church building in the Karlsruhe district of Rüppurr .

history

The current Evangelical Church of the Resurrection is the successor to the Nikolauskirche, which was built between 1774 and 1776 downstream on the Alb between the village and Rüppurr Castle. Rüppurr grew by several thousand residents over the years, whereupon the existing church became too small. A new building that is as centrally located as possible should create a replacement. At the instigation of Dean Philipp Roth and the then pastor Lebrecht Mayer, plans for a larger new building were pushed ahead. The construction was carried out by the church building officer at the time, Rudolf Burckhardt . In 1907 the foundation stone was laid for the neo-baroque church building. After completion of the Resurrection Church in 1908, the Nikolauskirche was handed over to the Catholic parish.

layout

Several artists working in Karlsruhe were responsible for the interior decoration and the paintings. The large-format glass paintings in the church above the galleries have the Reformation as their theme. The works are labeled "Luther at the Diet of Worms" and "Luther and Melanchthon explain the Bible" . Scenes from the life of Jesus can be seen at the front of the church . In the church there are figures from the Old and New Testaments , the Reformation, the Rüppurrer and Baden history. Some representations of people from recent history that are not common in a church are unusual. These representations are about Grand Duke Friedrich I , Otto von Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I , who found their place here due to their political importance. They stand for the conservative and German-national politics, as well as the connection between "altar and throne" . The 19 picture windows come from the Karlsruhe glass painter Hans Drinneberg and are now back in their original condition.

The exterior architecture of the church largely corresponds to the original appearance. Inside, only a few stained glass could survive the two world wars unscathed. The organ, altar and bells had to be replaced over the years. The church was last renovated in 2008.

graveyard

Behind the church on the river Alb is the four-hectare Rüppurr cemetery , where some well-known personalities are buried.
