The Assumption ( Romanian Biserica Înălțarea Domnului ) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Strada Cloşca 15 in the V district of Mehala of the western Romanian city of Timişoara ( German Timişoara ) and is located there on the Piața Avram Iancu .
history
In 1887 the Orthodox parish in this district separated into a Romanian Orthodox and a Serbian Orthodox denomination, and the Nicolaikirche was awarded to the Serbian Orthodox believers. The Romanian Orthodox believers built their own church on the Piața Avram Iancu in the neighborhood , but it had to be replaced after 25 years because it was in disrepair.
The cornerstone of the largest building in the Mehala, the Romanian Orthodox Church of the Assumption ( Biserica Inaltarea Domnului ) was laid at the same location on November 4, 1925 . The celebrations were King Ferdinand I of Romania , Queen Mary , Prince Carol and Princess Beatrice Ileana present. A document signed by the king was enclosed with the ceremony. The church, built according to the plans of the architect Victor Vlad , was consecrated on October 10, 1937 after a construction period of almost twelve years.
At that time the church consisted of about 4,000 families with about 10,000 believers.
