There are two other churches on this square, the Romanian Orthodox Biserica Inaltarea Domnului and the Roman Catholic St. Mary's Church . The Nicolaikirche is together with the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral on the Piața Unirii in the inner city ( Romanian Cetate ) and the Biserica Sfântul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe ( German  Church of the Great Martyr St. George ) in the 2nd District Fabric ( German  Factory City ) one of the three Serbian Orthodox churches in the city.

history

The first settlers of the Mehala, the Raizen , belonged to the Orthodox religious community. In 1744 they founded their then common Serbian-Romanian parish . The Nicolaikirche is the oldest documented building of the Mehala and was built between 1793 and 1797. The valuable paintings were created by Nicolae Alexici. The altar wall was made by Mihailo Ianici and the icons by Sava Petrovici .

In 1887 the Orthodox parish split into a Romanian and a Serbian denomination, and the church was assigned to the Serbian Orthodox believers. The Romanian Orthodox believers built their own church on the Piața Avram Iancu in the neighborhood , but it had to be replaced after 25 years because it was in disrepair. The foundation stone of the largest building in the Mehala, the Romanian Orthodox Church of the Resurrection ( Biserica Inaltarea Domnului ) was laid at the same location in 1925 .
