The Church of the Resurrection

The Church of the Resurrection stood on Sophienstrasse in the southern inner city of Stuttgart . It was the Church of the Evangelical Methodist Resurrection Church. The church was consecrated on September 11, 1879. The Methodist congregation in Germany and Great Britain , which had existed since the 1860s, had collected donations for the construction of the church . The preachers G. Samuel Paul Scheikher from London and Harms from Sunderland were present as guests of honor at the inauguration ceremony .

British and American bombing raids badly damaged the church during World War II . After the end of the war, the congregation again collected donations to rebuild the church. The construction followed the plans of the architect Pottkamp. The orientation of the service room was rotated by 180 degrees. The large gable window on the northeast side was closed and a cross was set in the outer wall. The altar has stood on the inside ever since. The Munich artist Maertesheimer designed the altarpiece using plastering technology. On January 15, 1950, the church was consecrated again.

The church has not been used by the Resurrection Church since 2010. After a mundane temporary use, the building was torn down by the Resurrection Church at the end of March 2013, despite resistance, in order to be able to sell the empty property. Since the church building was only “shaping the cityscape”, but not listed (according to the head of the Stuttgart monument protection authority in the town hall), nothing stood in the way of demolition. Since it was not possible to use the neighboring “ Das Gerber ” shopping center , a residential and commercial building with a day-care center was built on the property under the project name Sophie 23 .
