Auguštin Kostelec

Auguštin Kostelec (born August 5, 1879 in Metlika , † February 22, 1963 in Ivančna Gorica ) was abbot of the Parakeet Monastery from 1924 to 1963 .

Life

Kostelec entered the Sittich (Stična) monastery in 1899, which at that time was still a priory of the Wettingen-Mehrerau territorial abbey , and was ordained a priest in 1904. In 1913 Abbot Bernhard Widmann appointed him prior. As such, after the departure of the German-Austrian monks with the abbot in 1920/21 (as a result of the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy), he was elected abbot by the remaining monks in 1924.

Under Kostelec's leadership the monastery experienced, partly u. a. through the expansion of the school and boarding school, after the bloodletting of 1921 again a personal and economic boom, which the Second World War and the subsequent seizure of power by the communists soon ended. The agrarian reform deprived the monastery of its financial livelihood, Abbot Augustin was temporarily imprisoned. He died of a heart attack in 1963 and was buried in the abbey church.
