August Becker (physicist)

August Becker (born February 19, 1879 in Osterburken , † January 16, 1953 in Heidelberg ) was a German physicist.

Life

August Becker studied mathematics and natural sciences in Heidelberg and Kiel from 1897 to 1901. In 1901 he did his doctorate under Georg Hermann Quincke . In the same year he became Philipp Lenard's assistant at the University of Kiel . After his habilitation in 1905, he went back to Heidelberg University with Lenard in 1907 , where he became an associate professor. From 1909 to 1919 he was a lecturer in radiology. From 1913 he was a scheduled associate professor for theoretical physics. On April 1, 1935 he became full professor of physics and director of the physical and radiological institute of Heidelberg University. In the same year, the Physics Institute was renamed the “Philipp Lenard Institute”.

His scientific work is primarily concerned with cathode rays and their interaction with matter, with electricity carriers in gases and flames, and with various aspects of radioactivity .

Becker is considered a follower of Philipp Lenard. In 1937 he was elected a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 1946 he retired .

He was a member of the National Socialist Teachers' Union (NSLB).
