August Rust (born December 9, 1890 in Cammin near Neubrandenburg , † February 4, 1981 in Neustrelitz ) was a Mecklenburg farm worker, small farmer, postman and Low German folk teller.

Life

Rust's father was a day laborer and the boy attended the one-class elementary school in Cammin. After leaving school, he served as a groom on various farms. In 1912 he was called up to the cavalry in Parchim. During the First World War he was used on the Russian front. After the war he got a job with the railway. In 1921 he married Martha Rieck from Blankensee, with whom he had a daughter. In 1925 he was fired and had to make do with odd jobs. From 1928 he got permanent employment again. His job was to dig drainage ditches around Blankensee and to maintain them later. He also ran a small farm with his wife. After the Second World War he worked as a day laborer, then as a smallholder in Cammin and from 1953 took over the Camminer post office, which he held until 1960. Since his military service he began to collect jokes, rascals, fairy tales and stories, which he passed on orally in the Low German dialect. His repertoire also included stories from King Fritz (Friedrich II.)
