August Süsstrunk (born July 17, 1915 in Wettingen ; † December 18, 1994 in Baden ) was an internationally active Swiss geophysicist , professor at the University of Bern and later deputy director of the Wettingen teacher training college.
biography
August Eduard Süsstrunk grew up in a working class environment. When he attended the training school from the 1st to 5th primary class in the Wettingen teacher training college , he came into contact for the first time with what he would later work as Vice Director. After the district school in Baden, he completed the teachers' seminar in order to then teach at community schools.
His goal was to study mathematics and physics at the ETH Zurich , which he completed in 1942 with a diploma . For the next six years he worked as an assistant for geophysics at ETH. Eventually he founded a company that dealt with geophysical surveys. In 1958 he received the teaching assignment "Practical Geophysics, especially for Geology" at the University of Bern . In 1964 he worked as a lecturer and in 1967 as an honorary professor .
His professional knowledge was mainly in demand in Ticino , Italy and France and in Swiss glacier research . As a geophysicist, he was a member of the Glacier Commission. During measurements on the Gorner Glacier in 1948 and 1949, seismics were included as part of the glacier investigations.
In 1960 he switched to teaching mathematics and physics at the Wettingen teacher training college , where he also took on the role of Vice Director in 1964. During his 21 years in the Aargau school system, he was also involved in setting up the Wohlen branch seminar and in planning the higher educational institution in Zofingen .
