Auguste Nicolas (born January 6, 1807 in Bordeaux , † January 18, 1888 in Versailles ) was a French lawyer who devoted himself as an author to religious topics from a Catholic perspective.

Life

Born in Bordeaux, Auguste Nicolas studied law in Toulouse and Paris and worked as a judge in Bordeaux and from 1860 in Paris. He began to publish religious writings early on, in which he vehemently defended Christianity and Catholic dogmas against modernity. As a writer, he took an anti-Enlightenment conservative stance. His writings met with great success in France. Some books were translated into German during his lifetime, where they also experienced numerous editions. The author Oskar Panizza , who is critical of religion, deals with Auguste Nicolas' works on the Virgin Mary in his work "Maria" (1894).
