from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Augustinian Hermit Convent is a former monastery in Memmingen . It was dedicated to St. Elisabeth and was first mentioned in a document in 1252.

The monastery building is demolished. Only a small piece of cloister from the 13th century and a wall of the former monastery church remain.

history

The community was set up to take care of the poor and the sick in Memmingen. The monks of the Augustinian monastery in Memmingen took over the spiritual direction of the women's monastery, which accepted the Augustinian rule. The building of the monastery was on a property of the Frauenkirche outside the city wall. The sisters found their livelihood through a few chargeable farms and alms. In the 15th century, at the request of the city council, the nuns were reformed and given stricter rules. The church was rebuilt in 1472.

At the beginning of the 16th century there were strong tensions between the Augustinians and the women's convent until it broke up in 1519. The convent was now directly subordinate to the Augsburg bishop.

During the Reformation, the sisters gradually converted to the Lutheran faith, the convent dissolved and the property was transferred to the city hospital in return for compensation payments. The monastery finally became extinct in 1551. The former monastery barracks served as an armory from 1620 and as a theater from 1802. The monastery building and the former outbuildings were demolished.

Today's development

The buildings still on the site of the monastery were completely demolished in March 2008. Extensive excavation work was then carried out under the former monastery building. A former north wall of the monastery church and several remains of the foundation came to light. A new building complex was inaugurated on the site on October 10, 2010. The Landestheater Schwaben behind it got new workshops, an artist café and a small art stage. In the part that faces Lindentorstrasse, new commercial buildings were built. An underground car park with around 120 parking spaces was built under the site.
