Aulichthys japonicus is a small fish from the suborder of sticklebacks that occurs on the coasts of Japan and on the east coast of Korea .
features
It has an elongated, very slender and flaky body that can be 13 to 15 centimeters long. The dorsal and anal fins are short, sit behind the center of the body and face each other symmetrically. In front of the actual dorsal fin there are up to 25 tiny dorsal fin spines that are not connected to one another by fin membranes. Males remain slightly smaller than females, have a metallic green or blue snout during the breeding season and have teeth, while the females are toothless. Females are brown with small white spots.
Way of life
Aulichthys japonicus lives in large schools over shallow seagrass meadows , between Sargassum rods and over overgrown rock reefs. During the breeding season, the males are territorial, occupy fixed territories and are sought out by smaller groups of females to lay their eggs. Aulichthys japonicus spawns in sea squirts .
Systematics
Aulichthys japonicus is often associated with aulorhynchus family Aulorhynchidae assigned in the databases Fishbase and Catalog of Fishes it is with hypoptychus dybowskii in the family Hypoptychidae asked.
Both families are unlikely to be monophyletic when Aulichthys japonicus is included . Within the sticklebacks (Gasterosteales), Aulichthys japonicus is the most basal genus after Hypoptychus dybowskii . The systematic position is illustrated by the following cladogram :
