Aulorhynchus flavidus is a species of fish from the suborder of sticklebacks (Gasterosteales). It occurs in the northeastern Pacific from the coast of Alaska to northern Baja California .

features

Aulorhynchus flavidus becomes 18 cm long and has a stickleback-like shape but is very elongated, similar to the sea stickleback . The fish has 24 to 27 short dorsal fin spines , which are not connected by a fin membrane, followed by a triangular, soft-rayed dorsal fin with nine to ten soft rays. The anal fin is symmetrical to the dorsal fin with soft rays. The pectoral fins just close. The pelvic fins are supported by one hard and four soft rays. The caudal fin is small, forked, with 13 rays.

The fish are light colored, spotty brown, on the back varying from olive green to yellow-brown and creamy white on the belly. A light, silvery spot lies between the gill cover and the pectoral fins and extends to the throat. A dark band over the spot extends through the eye to the tip of the snout. In the case of brood-caring males, the muzzle is bright red.

Way of life

Aulorhynchus flavidus occurs in coastal waters overgrown with algae, in kelp forests , stony areas and over sandy areas at depths of 0 to 30 meters. The fish usually live in schools near the surface, sometimes in dense schools away from the coast. They feed on fish larvae and small crustaceans . Males form territories around the giant kelp ( Macrocystis pyrifera ) during spawning time . The female lays the eggs around the shoot and bends parts of the perch down so that the spawn is covered.
