Aurélie Névot (born October 16, 1975 ) is a French anthropologist and ethnologist who works at the École des Hautes Études en sciences sociales Paris (EHESS) as a researcher for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

life and work

Névot studied sociology and ethnology in Strasbourg and Paris and graduated in 2003 with a Ph.D. from. The Habilitation took place in 2017. Since 1998, she ran several years of field research in China . Since 2006 she has held a lifelong research position at the Center national de la recherche scientifique .

Her research is concerned - in the output of its field research on the Yi nationality in Yunnan (China) - with text-based Schamanismen ( "scriptural shamanism"). Her work initially focused on the rites and myths of this Chinese minority, which she also translated and commented on. For several years she has been expanding her research on writing and scripturality in an interdisciplinary perspective.

Névot's work is interdisciplinary. On the one hand, ethnographic, anthropological and philosophical approaches intersect in her research on script-based shamanism. In doing so, she takes up phenomenological elaborations (for example by Maurice Merleau-Ponty ), but at the same time ties in with the contemporary debate about an “ontological turn” in anthropology (following Philippe Descola and Viveiros de Castro ). On the other hand, it contributes to the development of an “anthropology of architecture” by reading architectural works as written testimony, the symbolism of which has to be deciphered and interpreted for its meaning.
