Coordinates: 30 ° 49 ′ S , 117 ° 29 ′ E The Shire of Aurukun is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 7,424.0 km² and has around 1,300 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the north of the state on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula between the Embley River in the north and the Holroyd River in the south.
Almost all LGA residents live in the village of Aurukun north of Acher Bay between the Ward River and Watson River.
history
A mission was established in Aurukun in 1904 to which the Aborigines living on the Cape York Peninsula were forcibly relocated. Due to new laws, the land around Aurukun was renamed Aboriginal Land Lease No. 1 leased to the indigenous people and handed over to limited self-administration.
In order to enter the area of the Shire, whether as a visitor or as a tourist, one must apply to the council for a permit.

The Aurukun Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
