Opuntia pyriformis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pyriformis means '(Latin pyrum, pirum pear) pear-shaped'.

description

Opuntia pyriformis grows tree-shaped with upward and sideways elongated branches and reaches heights of 3 to 5 meters. The grayish, pear-shaped shoot sections are up to 18 centimeters and more long. The small areoles are close together. The one or two yellowish thorns , there are occasionally more on old areoles, are slender, weak and 1 to 2.2 centimeters long.

The flowers are yellow. The slightly humped, not thorny fruits are up to 4 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia pyriformis is common in the Mexican states of Durango and Zacatecas .

The first description by Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1909.
