Training Division 286 (Wehrmacht)

The 286 training division was a German infantry division during World War II .

Division history

The division was set up at the beginning of April 1945 on the Oder front for the Vistula Army Group . It consisted of three regiments with two battalions each and one regiment with three battalions.

The establishment of the unit "for special use" was made from remnants of the battered 286th Infantry Division and from the Raegner division . She was subordinated to the 9th Army .

In this constellation, the division took part in the battle of the Seelow Heights , first unsuccessfully defending Frankfurt on the Oder and then Berlin . The division was initially able to push back the Soviet forces in order to avoid enclosing the city of Frankfurt, but then had to withdraw towards Berlin due to the advancing Soviet forces. The incomplete division (approx. 7,000 men) was wiped out during the subsequent defense of Berlin in May 1945.
