As reference samples a is advertising media referred to in the individual production with the desired advertising printing is provided. The customer has an accurate picture of the appearance of the finished product and would recommend this to production release .

Since, for example, the printing forms have to be produced for a failure sample as for serial printing and the full costs are incurred, the failure sample is usually quite expensive.

The term is used with the same meaning (initial sample from the final form) in the manufacture of die-cast and injection-molded parts.
