Parent rock (soil)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parent material of the soil formation is material geological origin, developed a ground from which. These can be solid rock ( granite , sandstone or mudstone ) as well as quaternary deposits ( gravel , sand or peat ).

The original rock is referred to in the soil profile as the C horizon , which is below the A horizon and - if available - below the B horizon when the soil formation is advanced .

The original rock of the soil formation is often multi-layered, for example in large areas of Central Europe, where during the last glacial period the thawing soil caused the widespread spread of debris .
