Ausonia (landscape)
Ausonia ( Greek : Αὐσονία) is the Greek name for a landscape in Italy that was inhabited by the ancient Ausones people. Ausonia was on the coast southeast of Rome, roughly on the border between central and southern Italy . In later poetry, the name Ausonia was used to designate larger areas in central and southern Italy or the entire Italian peninsula .
From the perspective of the Greek colonies in southern Italy, the Ausones (or Ausuni ) were indigenous people of Italy, but according to current research they were of Indo-European origin. After the sound shift fesiae > feriae ( Rhotazism ), the Latins called the people Aurunci, Aurunici or Aurini .
