The Austari-Jökulsá River is a glacial river in Iceland .
course
The river is located in the north of Iceland , has its source at the Hofsjökull glacier and flows from there towards Skagafjörður .
A little south of the local valley of the Norðurá , it joins the glacier river Vestari-Jökulsá to form the broad river Héraðsvötn , which after about 45 km into the sea, i. H. flows into the Skagafjörður.
Traffic and most important data
Just like its western "colleague", Austari-Jökulsá is considered difficult to cross because the river usually carries a lot of water. Its average amount of water is 60 - 100 m³ / s in summer and 20 - 30 m³ / s in winter. Most of the water volume measured was 320 m³ / s.
A ford for jeeps is located below the Illviðrahnjúkar . There has been a bridge at Laugafell since 1970 . This was initially used to bridge a glacial river in southern Iceland, the Jökulsá á Sólheimasandi, and was transferred here as soon as a new bridge had been constructed there.
tourism
Rafting is practiced on the river.
