Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO; German: Australian Nuklearwissenschafts- and Nuclear Engineering Organization ) is a public corporation in Australia in 1987 as a successor organization to the Australian Atomic Energy Commission was established. ANSTO is the Australian center for atomic research, which was founded under the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization Act 1987 . The headquarters are in Lucas Heights , a suburb of Sydney . ANSTO also operates the National Medical Cyclotron in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital .

ANSTO advises the government on nuclear policy issues and develops political concepts in national and international issues, and it develops scientific and technical concepts for the use of nuclear energy for the Australian nuclear industry. It carries out application-oriented studies for the technical application of atomic energy (material testing, reactor technology , nuclear medicine) and takes into account the effects on the environment (climate change, biosphere) on the basis of scientific findings.

ANSTO is responsible for four research institutes, the Bragg Institute , Institute for Environmental Research , Institute of Materials Engineering and Radiopharmaceutical Research Institute ; it produces radiopharmaceutical products in its OPAL research reactor in Lucas Heights .
