Australian Atomic Energy Commission

In November 1952, the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) was established following the passage of the Atomic Energy Act by the Australian Parliament, which replaced the Australian Energy Policy Commission . The AAEC should advise the government on nuclear policy matters. In addition to advising the government, AAEC carried out its own research in Lucas Heights in a suburb near Sydney . The AAEC was involved in the establishment of the International Atomic Energy Agency on July 29, 1957. AAEC also installed a uranium enrichment investigation programand advised the government on the construction of the nuclear power station in Jervis Bay . This organization was also involved in the development of the Ranger uranium mine .

In 1981 parts of the AAEC were spun off into the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and in 1987 the AAEC was incorporated into the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization .

The AAEC was the construction of the research reactor HIFAR involved from the beginning of January 1958, which up to the replacement of a light water reactor Open Pool Australian Light Water Reactor was operated (OPAL) in January of 2007. The same applies to the MOATA reactor on Lucas Heights , which was commissioned on April 10, 1961 and shut down on May 31, 1995.

In the area of responsibility of the AAEC research fall in the areas of radiochemistry , neutron scattering , sodium cooling systems, beryllium - facilitators , development of gas turbines , radiation protection and treatment , the environment, methods of hot isostatic pressing , MLIS and AVLIS .
