The Open Pool Australian Lightwater Reactor ( OPAL ) is a research reactor operated by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization since 2006 . It is located in Lucas Heights about 19 miles southwest of Sydney city center . It is a light water reactor with one of the most modern neutron scattering facilities , which was built by the Argentine high-tech company INVAP .

history

The reactor went critical for the first time on August 12, 2006 and reached its full output of 20 MW on November 3, 2006  . In addition to research purposes, it is used for the production of radioactive medical preparations. It replaces the HIFAR research reactor , which has been in operation since 1958 and which went out of operation on January 30, 2007.

After the initial adjustments, the reactor was able to operate more than 300 days per year.
