The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) (German: Australian and International Pilots Association ), which was founded in 1981, is a union that organized the interests of around 2,500 pilots in Melbourne in 2011 . The AIPA sees itself as a “professional association and federally registered organization” (German: “professional association with nationwide approval”) and does not use the term trade union. AIPA organizes Australian pilots for Qantas Airways , Jetstar Airways , Eastern Australia Airlines and Sunstate Airlines who operate national and international flight routes.

history

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) was formed in the early 1980s and was incorporated as a trade union organization in 1986. In May 2007, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission issued an order that Jetstar pilots could choose to join either AFAP or AIPA.

Memberships

AIPA is a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) with 46 Australian unions and in the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA), which consists of 93 unions. AIPA is also a member of the Oneworld Cockpit Crew Coalition , which includes pilots from Qantas, Aer Lingus , American Airlines , British Airways , Lan Chile , Iberia , Cathay Pacific , Finnair , Malev , Japan Airlines and Mexicana . AIPA has joined the International Transport Workers' Federation , an international transport union that brings together 4,600,000 transport workers in 155 countries with 749 unions.

Organizational structure and goals

AIPA is run by a management committee of 40 pilots who are elected. The president, four vice-presidents, a secretary and a treasurer are elected from among the members of the committee.

The goals are task fulfillment according to qualification, payment according to responsibility, observance of the applicable laws and rules, effective and efficient task completion.

2011

In February 2011, the AIPA made demands to increase the pilot's salary and job security. Since Qantas is not ready to follow the demands, plans of the AIPA have been drawn up that the demands could be enforced in a pilots strike.

If there was a strike, it would be the first in 45 years.
