The Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) (German: Association of Australian Pilots ) is a union for Australian professional pilots. The pilots union does not use the English term union. In Australia, in addition to AFAP, there is another trade union organization for commercial pilots, the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA).

history

The forerunner of the AFAP was the Australian Institute of Air Pilots and Navigators , which was founded on May 18, 1938 in the Town Hall in Melbourne from 40 aircraft pilots and flight navigators from Victoria , New South Wales , Queensland , South Australia and Western Australia .

After the end of World War II , this pilots union was renamed the Australian Air Pilots' Association , which dissolved in 1959 because the members did not recognize the government's arbitration system at the court level and they formed the AFAP, which was not subject to these regulations.

In 1989 there was a pilots' strike, which is one of the toughest strikes - involving the use of the military - in Australian history. The AFAP took many years reductions of salaries back and when she began her strike on August 18, 1989, the pilots were working only from 9:00 am until 17:00 pm because the government of the Australian Labor Party of Bob Hawke them as employees wanted to treat other professions - so their argument. The dispute escalated because the pilots refused to take flight operations, so the government deployed the Australian Defense Force military pilots in civilian flight operations. This leads to the resignation of the striking pilots.

Organizational structure and members

The organizational structure of the AFAP is based on grassroots democracy , with politics being determined by majority decisions and the control of the decisions of the executive members being monitored by local councils.

The AFAP organizes helicopter drivers, pilots from the airlines Cobham Aviation , Eastern Australia Airlines , Regional Express Airlines , Sunstate Airlines , Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia , Tiger Airways , V Australia and Virgin Australia . The pilots of the airline Jetstar can decide whether they organize themselves in the AFAP or AIPA.

In addition to lobbying, AIPA offers its members insurance against the loss of their pilot's license, retirement and death insurance, and discounts for travel, food and car rental.
