Autism understand (own spelling understand autism ) is a trade magazine on autism spectrum, that of the eponymous club understand autism in Reutlingen is issued. The magazine appears twice a year, in March and September. It is the first freely available general- interest magazine about autism in Germany.

Content and structure

Understanding Autism deals with relevant topics from the autism spectrum (e.g. Asperger's Syndrome , highly functional autism or early childhood autism ) in the form of up-to-date information on autism research, interviews, reports and short messages. The magazine is aimed at people in the autism spectrum, relatives and interested parties and offers insights into living with autism, orientation aid and information. In addition to recognized experts from various fields of autism research (e.g. Tony Attwood or Kai Vogeley ), those affected also have their say in guest articles and interviews in the magazine . The stated aim of the magazine is to critically question and educate autism-related content.

The magazine had a circulation of 3000 copies in autumn 2018 and is financed through advertising income, donations, sales to the public and funds from the association.

editorial staff

The magazine sees itself as an inclusion project; people diagnosed with autism are an integral part of the editorial team. The editors-in-chief are Christoph Ammon and Andreas Croonenbroeck, who himself has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome .

The association Understanding Autism is a Germany-wide association of people in the autism spectrum, relatives, experts and supporters. The aim of the association is to improve funding and support offers for people in the autism spectrum of all ages and their relatives. Representing the interests of autistic people is ensured by including those affected in the decision-making process, as is the case with the magazine Understanding Autism . So the 2nd chairman of the association should always be an autistic member. In 2017, the association received the lighthouse prize of the Ravensburger Verlag Foundation, endowed with 12,000 euros, for its commitment, which also includes the publication of the journal Autism Understanding .

The publication of the magazine and the participation of autistic people in a relevant specialist magazine, which is unique in Germany , were noticed in the national and local media, including on Deutschlandfunk , in the Schwäbisches Tagblatt and in various blogs. The publication is also noticed in autism research .
