The Autobahnkirche Siegerland - also Autobahnkirche on the A 45 - is a Christian ecumenical sacred building on the Bundesautobahn 45 in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The motorway church , inaugurated on May 26, 2013, is located on the edge of the Wilnsdorf truck stop , accessible via junction 23, Wilnsdorf in southern Siegerland .

Purpose and use

The church is dedicated to the silent devotion of travelers of all Christian denominations; for this purpose it is open every day around the clock.

The administration and maintenance of the church is the responsibility of the Förderverein Autobahnkirche Siegerland eV, which is mainly financed by donations. The friends' association also organizes the weekly closing devotions that take place every Friday in the church as well as occasional cultural events with a religious character ( sacred music and the like).

architecture

The building, a multiple award-winning design by the Frankfurt architects Schneider + Schumacher , is an example of postmodern sacred architecture. The interior exudes "a kind of nomadic, provisional tent security". The shape of the exterior of the church is based on geometric triangular shapes , which - apart from the dark gray basement of the two-story building - are kept in white throughout. In the entrance area of the church there is a typographical installation by Peter Zizka , which merges the aesthetics of automotive fonts with Psalm 91:11.
