The Autonaut ( Greek for self-sailor) was a shaft-driven boat designed by the inventor Herman FL Linden from Naples . It was the world's first boat of its kind.

details

In 1898 Linden patented a boat with two springy steel fins attached horizontally below the waterline fore and aft . The fins convert part of the kinetic energy of the orbital movement of the surrounding water into a forward movement of the boat. The first Autonaut was 3.96 meters long and reached speeds of up to three knots against wind and sea . A boat 7.32 meters long, built later, even increased this value to four knots.
