Authoring software (also: authoring tool, authoring or authoring system; English: authoring software) is intended to facilitate the creation of multimedia applications, especially in the e-learning area, for the authors of these applications.

Scope of tasks

The software supports the authors in their work. The authors do not have to have extensive programming knowledge in order to create training courses for web-based training , computer-based training or corresponding e-learning modules.

The authoring software makes it easier to create interactive presentations and animations, including complex multimedia applications. Interactions (e.g. reactions to user input or mouse clicks) and animations (e.g. movement of elements) can ideally be created intuitively. The integration of multimedia elements is also possible.

Examples of authoring software are Adobe Authorware , Lectora, IDA, the open source product eXe-Learning or the free school offering LearningApps .
