Avahi is a free implementation of Zeroconf , a technology for networking devices in a local network without having to be configured manually.

history

Avahi was developed by Lennart Poettering and Trent Lloyd . It is the result of the 2005 merger of Poettering's original mDNS / DNS-SD implementation called FlexMDNS and Lloyd's original code called Avahi . While most of today's code came from the FlexMDNS project, Avahi became the name for the joint project. The original development of FlexMDNS began in late 2004, and work on the original Avahi in early 2004.

Avahi was originally developed under the auspices of freedesktop.org , but has since developed into a stand-alone project.

The name Avahi refers to the woolly lemurs , a genus of primates that are native to Madagascar . Trent Lloyd set the name. The wool lemur is also the basis for the logo.
