Avak is an impact crater near Barrow in the US state of Alaska .

The diameter of the crater is twelve kilometers and its age is estimated to be less than 95 million years. It is partly on land and partly in the sea. The crater cannot be seen on the surface because it is covered with sediments from the Pleistocene and Pliocene .

In 1951 and 1952, a 1225 meter deep hole was drilled and the cores obtained proved that Avak is an impact crater. There are deposits of hydrocarbons in the crater .
