Avernassentom

The Avernassetom (also called Tom van Montenaken or tumulus from Cortis) a Gallo-Roman tumulus (grave mounds) on Tombeweg south of Montenaken in the municipality Gingelom in the extreme southwest of the province of Limburg in the region Flanders in Belgium .

The tumulus dates from the 2nd century AD. It has a diameter of about 23.0 meters and a height of 7.8 meters and is part of a group of six burial mounds within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from Montenaken. The burial mound is located on the Tommeveld, south of the Tombeweg and north of the A3 (E40) motorway between Liège and Brussels , on the Haspengau clay plateau.

According to the excavation plan by H. Schuermans, the burial mound is oriented northeast-southwest and the slope on the west side is steeper than that on the east side. The tumulus was according to information from V. Gauchez (1882) and E. Hublard (1903) by the troops of Louis XV. or, according to L. Renard (1900–1901), plundered by the troops of Louis XIV. A square pit and traces of the looting were found.

The tumulus has been under protection since 1979.
