As Avetheropoda (from Aves (birds) and Theropoda ( synonym : Neotetanurae)) the two more progressive theropod groups Carnosauria and Coelurosauria are combined. It was named because of the fact that the feathered dinosaurs, including birds, belong to this taxon.

The Avetheropoda differ from original theropod groups such as the Ceratosauria and the Spinosauroidea by some derived characteristics . These include an additional skull window in the upper jaw, modifications to the palate, rear skull , pelvis and hind legs. In addition, the area where the tail is stiffened is shifted more towards the body.
