Gasosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Central Jurassic of Asia. Few fossils have been discovered in rocks from the Central Jurassic of the southern Chinese province of Sichuan . The onlyspecies described ( type species ) is Gasosaurus constructus ; the first description was in 1985 by Dong Zhiming and Tang Zilu.

Gasosaurus is a basal (close to origin) theropod, its vertebrae, for example, show some very original features. The length of the dinosaur was about 4 meters.

description

Its systematic position within the theropods is still unclear due to the poor fossil situation. Some consider it an original coelurosaur , others classify it as a carnosaur . It could also be identical to Kaijiangosaurus , a theropod that has hardly been documented in fossils and comes from the same rock formation .

Live reconstruction

Gasosaurus is known for a skullless partial skeleton ( holotype IVPP V7264), which consists of vertebrae, the humerus , pelvic bones, leg and foot bones, among other things . It comes from the layers of the Xiashaximiao formation in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Naming

The name of the genus is meant jokingly. "Gasosaurus" means " gasoline lizard" (from the English word gas (oline) and the Greek sauros ) and is named after the oil drilling company that discovered the site. The Chinese word for gasoline also means "cause trouble" - a fitting name for a predatory dinosaur.
