Avondale Heights is a district in the northwest of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is about 12 km from the city center. In 2016 it had a population of 11,633. Avondale Heights is bordered by the Maribyrnong River to the south, east, and west . The northern limit is Buckley Street.
history
The area was settled when Melbourne was founded in 1835. In the first decades there was mainly sheep breeding. The area was initially known as Maribyrnong West . In the 1930s, the large pastures were subdivided and used by smaller farms for cattle and dairy farming. In 1957 a post office opened. From the 1960s the area was converted into a residential area.
