The Takahue River rises on the northeast flank of the 744  m high Raetea , which is one of the Mangamuka Ranges formed by volcanic activity . The Victoria River rises further east on the northern flank of the same mountain range.

The Awanui River initially flows in a westerly direction through the small town of Kaitaia, which has a population of just under 4,900, and then turns north to flow east of the village of Unahi into Rangaunu Harbor . On its northern route it flows through the small town of Awanui , which is the namesake of the river. The Awanui River , which, in contrast to the Victoria River, flows through agricultural area, drains together with its tributaries an area of 637 km 2 .
