The Rangaunu Harbor is a natural harbor on the west coast of Northland Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Rangaunu Harbor is located south of the start of Aupouri Peninsula some 20 kilometers north of Kaitaia . To the west, the natural harbor, which extends around 15 km inland, is around 11 km wide, has an estimated 70 km shoreline and covers an area of 97 km 2 , is bounded by the Karikari Peninsula . 53% of the port area falls dry at low tide and consists of sand and silt , whereby a total of 3.1 hectares can be classified as mangrove areas . The port entrance is a good 1.3 km wide and at 10 m the deepest point of the water.
The Rangaunu Harbor opens at Kotiatia Point in the Rangaunu Bay and the Pacific Ocean . Walker Island is located in the harbor entrance , a 1.3 km long island consisting of sand. With Omaia Island , Okatakata Island and Motukaraka Island there are three other islands in the southern part of the natural harbor. The largest water inlet with around 8 m 3 / s. Rangaunu Harbor gets from the Awanui River , which feeds the harbor from the south of Awanui .
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs at a distance of about 2 km along the west and south-west banks and the New Zealand State Highway 10 touches the port area in the south and south-east. The small settlement of Paparore is on the southwest bank and the Kaimaumau settlement on the northwest bank . The settlements of Waiharara , Awanui , Kaingaroa and Lake Ohia surround the port area at some distance from west to east.
Administratively, Rangaunu Harbor belongs to the Far North District of Northland .

The Rangaunu Harbor was behind a series of bays, which are characterized by sand deposits from volcanic outcrops, such as the Karikari Peninsula , had formed. In the west these are the sand deposits of Ninety Mile Beach , in the north those of East Beach and in the east those of Tokerau Beach .
