The Awatere River is a river in the Marlborough district . It flows northeast along a geological fault line on the northwest side of the Kaikoura Ranges . On the southeast side of the mountain range, 20 km further south, the valley of the Clarence River runs almost parallel to it.
The river flows from its source in the mountainous interior over 110 km to the northeast and flows into the Cook Strait in the south of Clifford Bay . It absorbs the water from numerous tributaries.
On its way the river passes the places Molesworth , Muller , Gladstone , Camden , Woodmans Bench , Blairich and Seddon .
Until 2008, the bridge of New Zealand State Highway 1 over the river over the road bridge still had a Main North Railway track . After the construction of a new road bridge, the old bridge only serves as a railway bridge.
