Axel Gerlach

Axel Gerlach (born January 14, 1939 in Bremen ) is a German politician . From 1999 to 2003 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology .

Gerlach studied law and economics at the Universities of Munich and Hamburg and received his doctorate in international law in 1967. In 1968 he joined the Federal Ministry of Economics.

There he initially worked in the field of medium-sized companies and later in energy policy. From 1983 to 1995 he was responsible for economic relations with Eastern Europe , Africa and Asia ; from 1995 he headed the central department of the house. Since August 1999, Axel Gerlach has been State Secretary responsible for the central department, industry, foreign trade and European policy of the Federal Ministry of Economics.

In July 2000, he also took on the role of coordinator for the maritime industry ( Maritime Coordinator of the Federal Government) on behalf of Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .

Gerlach's merits lie primarily in the improvement of the foreign trade relations of the Federal Republic of Germany, especially with Eastern Europe and Russia, in the liberalization of world trade and in his special commitment to German shipbuilding.

Gerlach has been retired since July 2003.
